In the 25 top selling cars in January, only six significant players came out and cemented their position in the top 25. They cover more than 70% to 80% of the market on their own. These are Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai, Mahindra, Kia, and Honda. The Maruti holds its position as number one. Maruti alone has 10 strong products out of 25. The best-selling hatchback, sedan, and MPV are from Maruti Suzuki.
Table of Contents
Maruti Suzuki sold 136,313 cars in January 2023. Second is Hyundai Motors, which has four products on the top 25 list and sells 42,720 vehicles. And the third one is very close to the second one: our Indian brand, Tata Motors. Tata’s Nexon is the best-selling SUV in January 2023, and Punch, Tiago, and Altroz are on the line-up. Tata sold approximately 42,280 vehicles in January.
Top Selling Cars January 2023:
Here you can see the top selling cars sold in India in the month of January 2023: hatchbacks, SUVs, sedans, MPVs, and compact SUVs. We would also look at a brief difference from January 2022 (year over year) in this case.
Hatchback
Hatchbacks are the best-selling product for any automobile brand. They are someone’s first car that comes in under budget, or someone looking for a car to drive in the city. Also, small cars are easy to maintain and service. Five of the eight are Maruti vehicles in top hatchback trim. The other two players are Hyundai and Tata.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto was the best-selling car of January 2023, selling 21,411 units in one month. WagonR is also very close to Maruti, selling 20,334 cars. Swift could outperform last year’s performance, which saw a 14% drop in sales. Because of the requirements in India, the hatchback craze will never die.
POSITION | CAR | JANUARY-2023 | JANUARY-2022 | IMPROVEMENT/DECLINE |
1 | Maruti Suzuki ALTO | 21,411 | 12,342 | 73%(Plus) |
2 | Maruti Suzuki WAGON R | 20,466 | 20,334 | 1%(Plus) |
3 | Maruti Suzuki SWIFT | 16,440 | 19,108 | -14%(Minus) |

7 | Maruti Suzuki IGNIS | 5,842 | 1,993 | 193%(Plus) |
8 | Tata ALTROZ | 5,675 | 4,525 | 25%(Plus) |
SUV
This appears to imply that Tata Nexon has no other competitors. The Nexon held its first position and became the king of the SUV market in India for many years after the Maruti Suzuki Brezza lost its position. There are 11 SUVs out of a total of 25. In the last few years, SUVs have become more prevalent in India.
But things need to look better for the Hyundai Venue and Kia Seltos. The sales decreased by 6% and 9%, respectively, compared to last year. Mahindra is selling the new-generation Scorpio alongside the old one (Scorpio Classic), so sales have increased by 118% since last year. This number can be higher because, because of the chip shortage, Mahindra is not able to deliver more cars.
POSITION | CAR | JANUARY-2023 | JANUARY-2022 | IMPROVEMENT/DECLINE |
1 | Tata NEXON | 15,567 | 13,816 | 13% (Plus) |

11 | Mahindra XUV 700 | 5,787 | 4,119(XUV 500) | 40%(Plus) |
Sedan
The market for sedans decreases day by day. So, aside from a few players like Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze, Volkswagen Ameo, and Hyundai Verna and Aura, no company is interested in launching a sedan. However, the dzire outsells SUVs and hatchbacks in the top 25 list and ranks among the top ten car sales in January 2023.
POSITION | CAR | JANUARY-2023 | JANUARY-2022 | IMPROVEMENT/DECLINE |
1 | Maruti Suzuki DZIRE | 11,317 | 14,967 | -24%(Minus) |
2 | Honda AMAZE | 5,580 | 5,395 | 3%(Plus) |
MPV
In comparison to sedans, MPVs hold a better market share. There will be no Toyota Innova this time, but Maruti has two popular products. EECO and Ertiga sell 22,000 vehicles, which is quite good. However, sales of the Ertiga fell after the introduction of the Kia Carens. Maruti Ertiga sales were down 18% yearly, while Kia Caren’s sales increased by 1274%. Maruti should take it seriously, or it will lose its position.
POSITION | CAR | JANUARY-2023 | JANUARY-2022 | IMPROVEMENT/DECLINE |
1 | Maruti Suzuki EECO | 11,709 | 10,528 | 11%(Plus) |
2 | Maruti Suzuki ERTIGA | 9,750 | 11,847 | -18%(Minus) |
3 | Kia CARENS | 7,900 | 575 | 1274%(Plus) |
Compact SUV
Two players The Maruti S-Cross and Nissan Kicks are gone, but two new siblings have arrived: the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Toyota HyRyder, with 8,662 and 4,194 sales, respectively, putting them in the top five.
